His train of thought was interrupted by the sound of an argument. Adonya and Seraphina were eating together at their little table, near the window, but for once, they spoke loudly. Seraphina’s plate was full.
Adonya gestured toward Seraphina. “You’re really not going to eat your food?”
Seraphina crossed her arms. “I can’t.”
Adonya glared at her. “Why? It’s suddenly not good enough for you?”
“I haven’t been feeling well since last night.”
“You!” Adonya pointed a finger at Seraphina accusingly. “You haven’t been feeling well? How do you think I feel about it? It happened to me, not you.”
Bright raised his eyebrows. What were they talking about? Was it the wolves attacking? Why would that cause them to fight? She should be celebrating her daughter’s victory.
“I thought I knew you, Adonya, but now I’m not sure anymore.” Seraphina frowned.
“You think that’s reason enough to punch your daughter?” Adonya turned her head just as the sunlight hit her face. Bright gasped. Her right eye was so black and bruised, it was almost closed shut.
Seraphina leaned back in her chair to distance herself from her daughter. “You conveniently forget that you attacked me first.”
“It wasn’t on purpose.” Adonya looked down at her hands as if they belonged to someone else. “I got excited by the wolves and I couldn’t control it.”
Seraphina’s eyebrows met sternly in the middle of her forehead. She rolled up her left sleeve to reveal a large trail of oozing blisters. “You just accidentally lit your mother on fire?” Seraphina laughed. “You’re not even good at lying. You’re possessed by a demon. You may look like my daughter, but I refuse to believe you are her anymore. Until you give her back to me, I will hurt you in any way that I like.”
