Q: Please tell us about yourself.
I’ve been writing since before I knew it was wanted I wanted as a career. It started in high school, where a 5-page writing assignment would become a 12-15 pager from me. I tend to write long, full stories and have a hard time keeping away from the keyboard. I’m a huge sci-fi/fantasy geek and my first novel is a sprawling nautical fantasy that will span five books. But I became side-tracked by an idea for a romance novel and it wouldn’t let me go. Love Beyond Words, my first published novel, is based off a prompt from a writing contest and released in October of last year. From that novel, the idea to write a series of romance novels, each set in a different world city took shape.
My other life is being a stay-at-home mom to two feisty little girls. I’m fortunate to have a husband who supports and believes in me to help give me the time I need to devote to writing. Couldn’t do it without him! J
Q: Tell us about your book
Unbreakable is the second book in the City Lights series and is set in Los Angeles. It’s about a high-powered attorney named Alex Gardener who is engaged to a successful businessman. On n the surface, it looks like they have a fairytale life: money, success, security and love. But Alex’s fiancé isn’t big on romance or physical intimacy, to say the least, and Alex is rather starved for it. She’s managed to convince herself that she and her fiancé are merely busy, and besides, she’s extremely driven in her own career.
That all changes the day she has to run an errand at a local bank…and that bank is overrun with armed men in monster masks. Alex finds herself held hostage for three days, and one of her fellow captives is a man named Cory Bishop.
Cory is on the opposite spectrum from Alex: he’s a hard-working construction worker struggling to make ends meet while retaining custody of his daughter. He and Alex are brought together over the course of these three fearful days, and the result is a bond that neither of them expected, and that is impossible to break, despite the forces ranged against them.
Q: What inspired you to write Unbreakable?
I had the flash of an idea several years ago—a handsome man striking up a conversation with a beautiful woman as they waited in line at a bank. The robbers bust in and that’s where the idea left off, waiting for me to flesh it out.
It ended up being a lot more than a suspenseful tryst between two strangers, but kind of a book about what it means to be there for family, sacrifice, and the true meaning of “being rich.”
Q: How much time per week do you spend writing/editing your work?
As much as I possibly can. I get up every morning at 5am to have some writing time before the school day begins for the girls, and then I write/edit every spare chance I can after other work is done. I can’t NOT be writing, is the short answer. ;)
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
I’m working on Book III of the City Lights series, this one set in New York City. It’s about talented violinist who is shackled by her own self-doubt. She takes a job as the live-in assistant to a bitter, angry young man who's been disabled in a horrifying accident. His disability is blindness, and let me tell you, writing from his perspective has been a wonderful challenge.
Title: Unbreakable
Author: Emma Scott
Genre: Contemporary Romance / Romantic Suspense
Alex Gardener has her life planned out, down to the smallest detail. She has a skyrocketing career as a litigation attorney, a close group of socialite friends, and is engaged to one of the most successful businessmen in Beverly Hills. Everything is just as she wants it: comfortable, predictable, secure…if lacking passion. Fire.
Cory Bishop is a struggling working man, trying to make ends meet while fighting to keep custody his young daughter. He knows that working hard is the only way to achieve his goals, but lately it seems everything he wants hangs just out of reach.
The bank robbery changes everything.
Alex and Cory spend three harrowing days as hostages locked in a bank with fifty frightened people and six criminals who grow more desperate–and dangerous–by the hour. Alex and Cory find comfort and safety with each other and reveal their deepest hopes and fears and secrets, unknowingly building a bond forged out of desperation and fear, one that they can’t break, even once outside the bank’s walls.
Their lives are turned upside down, irrevocably altered, and they seek to move on and put the robbery–and each other–behind them.
But some bonds, once forged, cannot be broken.
Emma Scott lives and works in the California Bay Area with her patient husband and two feisty little girls.
